As part of our STEM class, Grade 5 students took up an interesting challenge: building a cube using nothing more than matchsticks and glue.

Though the task looked simple on paper, it turned out to be a real test of patience. Students had to carefully join the matchsticks edge by edge, keep all the sides equal, and make sure the finished cube could actually stand on its own without wobbling or collapsing.

The activity quietly wove together Maths, Science and Technology. Students drew on their knowledge of shapes and measurements to keep the cube true, thought about balance and stability as they built up each face, and sharpened their designing and problem-solving skills whenever a joint needed fixing.

More than anything, the challenge showed our young learners that even a simple-looking task can demand careful planning, patience, teamwork and creativity — a fun, hands-on STEM experience that had them thinking, building, testing and improving right up to the last matchstick.
