Logic Lab
Launched in 2026, Logic Lab is a math and logical-thinking program at The Blue Mountains School, run in collaboration with Mr. Arvind, a parent of the school who volunteers his time to bring mathematical puzzle-solving to our students. Logic Lab is deliberately a mixed-age-group program, bringing together students from Grade 2 through Grade 8 to take on the same question at the same time — because reasoning clearly is a skill every grade can practice together, not something that waits for a particular grade level.
Every so often, Mr. Arvind sets a new puzzle for the whole group. Students are encouraged to work through it and share how they arrived at their answer — on Logic Lab, the explanation counts for just as much as the answer itself. A selection of these questions, and the thinking behind them, will be featured here as the program continues through the year.
The Hen-and-a-Half Riddle
Math Battle"If a hen and a half lays an egg and a half in a day and a half, how many eggs will six hens lay in six days?"
Explanation for the answer is as important as the answer itself.
The Goose and the Flock
Math BattleA lone goose was flying in the opposite direction from a flock of geese. He cried: “Hello, 100 geese!” The leader of the flock answered: “We aren't 100! If you take twice our number and add half our number, and add a quarter of our number, and finally add you, the result is 100, but… well, you figure it out.” The one goose flew on, but could not find the answer.
Then he saw a stork on the bank of a pond looking for frogs. Among birds the stork is the best mathematician. He often stands on one leg for hours, solving problems. The goose descended and told his story.
The stork drew a few lines with his beak to represent the puzzle. “Do you understand?” the stork asked. Goose: “Not yet.” (This is what the stork drew):
