The Art Elective spent the week with paint-stained hands, working on two very different projects at once: turning plain canvas tote bags into wearable art, and sanding rough coconut shells into smooth coasters.

At the painting table, each student picked their own design and ran with it — whales, roses, sunbursts, a lotus in bloom, even a leaf print pressed straight onto the fabric. No two bags came out alike, and that was the point: freehand brushwork, colour mixing and a bit of patience turned a plain cotton bag into something each student could call their own.

Across the room, another group took on a slower, more physical kind of craft — scraping and sanding the fibrous husk off coconut shells to shape them into coasters. It's fiddly, hands-on work that rewards patience over speed, and a good reminder that art isn't only about a paintbrush.
