Chasing the Blue-Black Clue: Grade 8 Tests Leaves for Starch
25 August 2026
Our Grade 8 students carried out an interesting hands-on experiment to test the presence of starch in leaves. The activity helped them understand how plants produce and store food through photosynthesis.
The students first boiled the leaf in water to soften it and stop chemical reactions. They then placed the leaf in ethanol, which removed the green chlorophyll and made the colour change easier to observe. Finally, iodine solution was added to the leaf.
The appearance of a blue-black colour indicated the presence of starch. Through this effective investigation, students were able to connect classroom learning with practical observation and understand how starch can be used as evidence that photosynthesis has taken place.
The experiment provided our students with valuable experience in following scientific procedures, making observations, and drawing conclusions from experimental evidence.
